WHO SPEAKS FOR THE BASIC SCHOOL TEACHER
I watch with great concern the happening in the education sector in recent time. My concern emanates from treatment and intimidation that basic school teachers and headteachers faced in their professional duty.
First and foremost, permit me to say, any building built on weak foundation stands to suffer perpetual collapse. To be Frank, I think the above is same with our educational system.
Specifically I observed with dismay the focus of government and its assigned to sort of placed premium on SHS and neglecting basic schools.
Come to think of it, why will anybody feed, supply uniforms, exercises and note books to SHS students and decided to leave out pupils in JHS?
All teachers at SHS are to benefit from ghs20.00. Per child Motivation package from government. Again all SHS 3 teachers are also to get additional GHS 50. 00 per child.
Does it means that those of the teachers at basic level need not motivated? Those teachers preparing jhs3 pupils have no blood in them? What unfair treatment is this?
At the end of BECE, the same officials organize SPAM to castigate the teachers who were neglected. And I asked,
WHO SPEAKS FOR THE BASIC SCHOOL TEACHERS?
ironically, when these teachers at basic level organize the same intervention for their candidates, they are asked to stop and harassed as if they are committing crime.
Come to think of why will education office charge teachers for attending workshops? Why will pupils at basic level pay for sports, computer, cultural, sanitation, library and so on yet their counterparts at SHS enjoys all this free? Are house masters/ Mistresses not pay allowance? Are HOD’s not given allowances, are PE tutors not paid, don’t SHS has cleaners who are paid? Why are class teachers at basic level who have additional responsibilities not given allowances? Why are PE teachers at basic level not given allowances? What about academy board members, curriculum leaders ? Why? Why? What will motivate the young teachers to give out their best at the basic level? It stands to reason that as long as authorities refused to turned and see teachers at basic level as equally qualified and motivate them, the foundation of our cherished education system stands weak and any intervention at the SHS and above, will not yield the anticipated result.
