Residents of Anyinam a farming community in the Atiwa east district of the eastern region are crying bitterly expressing worried and fear over illegal mining activities that is causing their water bodies polluted.
Residents are calling on state authorities to help drive away illegal small scale miners in the community.
They are accusing their leaders Dce, Mp and some party executives of selling river Beremu which serves as the only water source in the community for farming and domestic use to illegal small scale miners.
They claimed Galamsey operators paid GH¢10,000 to the authorities to mine gold in the river at the expense of the community members.
The community dwellers complained mining activities in the river Beremu and its surroundings has affected all farming activities in the community due to the toxic chemicals used by the miners.
In an interview with Asona Dehyie Kwateng , a concerned resident, explained that they lack potable water and that residents resort to ‘dirty’ water.
‘We are so much worried because when you look at the river its so much polluted and one cannot drink the water, now we don’t have water to drink, people resort to drink the dirty water and you know problems associated with drinking polluted water, its a big problem facing this community, government should send security forces to drive these people away, because they are destroying our lands and river, most of them are armed robbers, they pretend to engage in mining and resort to vices,’ he stated.
Speaking to the Queen mother of Anyinam, Nana Ama Appiaa II she said chiefs can’t sit aloof to witness this worrying development.
She therefore calls on the DCE, the regional minister and all other stakeholders to quickly intervene before things get escalated.
She also revealed that, the way and manner these illegal miners have forcibly stolen the land from its original owner, and illegally selling them to others is very uncalled for.
“Asona Dehyie Kwarteng visit to the said site, revealed that, these illegal miners, after stealing the concession from the owner who had bought the land with billions in turn sell the land in acres to anyone who wished to acquire the land.
During my undercover investigation, i met one Micheal a.k.a Obolo and comrades) who claimed to give me an acre land for Gh¢10,000 after we pretended to be gallamsy dealers.
