Replacing WASSCE with University Entrance Exams is the Best: WAEC’s Credibility is Too Low- Counsellor Daniel Fenyi

  1. Over the weekend, news broke aluding that the Education Minister, Dr. Napo, has suggested that WASSCE 2020 will be cancelled if the Covid ’19 persists and be replaced by University Entrance Exams (UEE).

  2. This news has been flat denied by the Minister. However, I believe the nation should give the story some attention and have some serious conversation around it.

  3. Over the years, WAEC has been the only body in charge of conducting external/final exams at the JHS and SHS levels. The monopoly WAEC has enjoyed over the years has outlived its usefulness, in my opinion.

  4. In business where quality matters, “competition” is a requirement. Unfortunately, on an important matter as the quality of examination, WAEC has no competing examining body.

  5. Leakage of questions, buying of grades/certificates and many other malpractices have allegedly fraughted WAEC-conducted exams in Ghana. Certificates awarded by WAEC are not valued and respected as before.

  6. As a consequence, the various tertiary institutions should be allowed to conduct their own entrance exams, in my opinion. This will give the tertiary institutions the oppprtunity to admit who indeed qualifies for admission and for what programme.

  7. In that case, SHS 3 students could be awarded “Certificate of Completion” after school, probably after writing their internal Mock exams. This certificate will present them qualified to buy Forms of their preferred institutions and write the University Entrance Exams.

  8. For those who may not be able to continue immediately for some reasons, special examination could be conducted for them leading to the award a “High School Diploma” to enter the world of work.

  9. I hope to inspire national conversation on Examinations, University Admissions and the general Education System in Ghana with this material.
